More information about piano lessons:
Every student is different, but for most beginning piano students we use the following teaching curriculum:
1. A method book such as Alfred's or Faber & Faber (this usually includes a lesson book and a theory book). This is the core of most piano lessons for beginners and is a great way to learn the fundamentals of the piano.
2. Flash cards, games, and other supplementary materials. Flash cards are a great way to reinforce music theory and can be used away from the piano and oustide of the lesson. Many younger students find that games are a great way to learn musical concepts as well.
3. Scales & technique exercises. These are especially applicable to the student who wants to learn classical or jazz. Scales, arpeggios, and other exercises are not for every students- some students find them tedious and for these students, scales can turn them away from the piano. For students who are willing to put in the time practicing scales and arpeggios, however- these exercises can tremendously improve piano playing.
4. Contemporary songs. Most kids at one time or another will get bored of only playing songs out of their lesson book. Kids want to play songs they know from current artists! At our recitals, you'll hear songs from Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, the Beatles, Coldplay, and more. When kids play songs they like, they're more likely to practice and stick with piano lessons long-term.
